#Yemen – where is the money? 2010 report: “Only 0.5% of the country’s total population has relationship with the country’s formal banking system”

The banking system provides an indicator of the total size of the major economic elites, and of which groups are most likely to have access to credit in the country. In a 2010 report, An Assessment of the Status of the National Credit Reporting System in Yemen, the Arab Credit Reporting Initiative estimated that 800,000 people in the country had a relationship with the country’s formal banking system, while only 129,905 firms and individuals had access to credit. If these numbers represent the elites, then they make up as little as 0.5 per cent of the country’s total population.
